Throughout the Ancient Olympic games, religion played an extremely influential role, and impended its development over time. Depictions of the Greek gods and goddesses are seen across a large amount of found artefacts created in the Ancient Olympic era. These depictions also clearly display the development throughout history of religion and beliefs in association with the games. The importance of the religious festival was high on the society, and was displayed across their currency around this time. These were used to commemorate the significance of the festival, and featured many aspects that related to other important factors in Greek society.…
Many factors were vital influences upon the modern Olympic Games movement from 1892 to 2002. Political interests in the late 20th century were one such factor that shaped this movement. While the Olympics were originally intended to bring together the international community (which was the reason that Pierre de Coubertin wished to reinstate the games from ancient times), but they were also responsible for sparking intense competition between Olympians and their supporting countries as they strived to come out on top and flaunt their country’s power and fertility. Secondly, the Olympics also opened up an opportunity for economic gain and opulence. Host countries and companies that advertised in the games were given a chance to obtain financial…
Throughout time many nations have competed in the Olympics. Nations compete against each other through many athletic events. Many people come together to watch the Olympic games. World issues, such as WWII, gender equality, and the Cold War, have affected the development of the modern Olympics. Issues involving WWII has affected the Olympics’ development.…
Perhaps the most influential contribution by ancient Greek to the western civilization is sports. The origin of the Olympics derived from the competition of multiple isolated/ independent states in Greece that had the passion for competitions through series of sports events. And perhaps this passion led to the creation of a long lasting tradition of tournaments that is now known as the “Olympic games” that is now currently held internationally worldwide (Document 6).…
During the times of Ancient Greece, a symbol of the olympics was the flame. The flame was a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. Australia first hosted the Olympic games in 1956. These games were a major turning point in Australia’s popular culture. It changed the face of Australian sport, allowed women to participate in sport more and it helped the production of Televisions in Australia. As Ron Clarke lit the olympic flame on the 22nd of November, 1956, the landscape of Australian sport changed forever.…
I choose to compare and contrast the images from the Mexico Olympic games in 1968 and the Sydney Olympic games in 2000 because they represent their culture into two different approaches. The Mexico logo uses lettering to represent their culture whereas Australia’s culture is more represented in the image above the text. The Mexico logo was based off of Op-art which was popular in this decade creating the target in the center look. The look also alludes to the Mayan glyphs that often included similar linear patterns. Historically Mexico had an abundance of conflict during this year which is represented by the black and white color contrast.…
The 1920s were a time that the Olympics really became an event for the entire world. According to John Horne in Understanding the Olympics, “after Athens 1896 the next three Olympics were mostly for trade fairs but it was not until the 1920s that the profile of the events began to grow” (Horne). What this means is the Olympics really did not become a spectator event until the twenties. However, this event is a popular event throughout the world. Chris Hallinan says that, “Olympics in the 1920s were largely a Euro-centric enterprise but India’s embrace of Olympism in the 1920s was almost simultaneously accompanied by a powerful push for diffusing the Olympic ideal in Latin American and South-East Asia”(169).…
The Olympics is an amazing event where sport competitions are held. But no one expected who helped fund the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Nicknamed “The Nazi Games,” were sponsored by Hitler. Originally, Hitler did not want anything to do with the Olympics, but he thought it would be good for propaganda and to show Nazi’s “Power”, so he helped. He thought it would be good to stop and hide the terror from Jews for a while, so when it was time, he tried to make the games as smooth as possible.…
The hero of the games for the United States was sprinter and long jumper Jesse Owens, he was african-american who was a winner in his four olympic events. The four events he won were the one hundred meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter relay, and set the world record in long jump that day. Jesse Owens by himself destroyed the political goals of Hitler during the Olympics by showing that the Aryan race was not the dominant force that would reign over the games (Ockerman). In 1968 during the Mexico City Olympics with the host country of Mexico two olympic medalist…

These factors continue to influence the games today and they are constantly evolving as time progresses. In order to more fully comprehend the factors that helped shape the Olympic Games in the 20th century, an additional document such as a male competitor’s opinion of having females perform in the Olympic Games. This document could show the opinion of a male athlete and could be compared to the opinion of Hassiba Boulmerka (Document 8) and with document 2 to produce a more complete assessment of the social factors, in particular, that shaped the modern Olympics. Another document that would be helpful in assessing the factors shaping the modern Olympics could be a document containing views on the Olympics from ordinary middle class citizens in various host countries. Middle class citizens probably would be able to give a reliable idea of what the Olympics are like and could describe major elements that impact the games.…
It’s amazing how many horrible acts the Nazi’s were already commiting were simply over looked. Most large and small nations still participated in the Games, which helped Hitler and the Nazi ’s keep their charade and illusion of a peaceful, nice, and great nation going. They were able to portray themselves as a negotiable country, that other countries could work with. Perhaps the Nazi Regime could have been stopped earlier if other countries would have had a backbone, and boycotted the Olympics.…

For example, the 1936 Berlin Game was intentionally awarded to Germany so the republic could show that it had regained its status among European countries (“Politics and the Olympics”). With the Nazis in power, Adolf Hitler used the event as a platform to prove his theory of racial superiority. Likewise, the 1948 London Game had a greater political significance as the participation came to symbolize political recognition and legitimacy (“Politics and the Olympics”). Germany and Japan were not invited to the London Game because of their war time roles. During the 1956 Melbourne Game, China withdrew after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized Taiwan and it did not return to the Olympics until 1980 (“Politics and the…
