For Total, being one of the industry leader means that it must also be able to protect the environment. It is therefore important to ensure that everyone has energy and this in an environment that is respected. Due to the general interest, Total wants to fight climate change. Because of its activities such as the use of petroleum products and gas as well as its commercialisation, the responsibility of Total will implement carbon emission management tools for bloodhound adverse impacts. The oil and gas activity is not less than a third of global emissions of greenhouse gases. In order to meet their responsibilities, Total aims to reduce carbon emissions by creating facilities and …show more content…
For this, Total has set up a certain number of measures.
Fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil and coal accounted for 81% of the energy supply in the world and it should be around 74% in 2035. According to the International Energy Agency, it is estimated that the demand for fossil fuels is expected to grow according to the population growth. With nearly 60% of global emissions of greenhouse gases, fossil fuels are generated annually by human activity. Indeed, more than half of the 60% (or approximately one third of total greenhouse gas emissions) comes from oil and gas; the rest comes from coal.
That is why Total is focusing to accept its responsibility as a company that uses, produces and sells oil and gas. Total will therefore deploy a policy focusing on four strategic priorities in order to control and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases:
• Reducing direct emissions of its facilities
• Reducing indirect emissions caused by its products
• Expand the use of carbon capture storage (CCS)
• Development of low-carbon …show more content…
Even though sulphate dioxide (SO2) is important, Total has also decided to focus on the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Indeed, regardless of the combustion process, all involve the release into the air of nitrogen oxides. With the presence of direct sunlight, these compounds are forerunners of the formation of ozone in the lower part of the atmosphere (troposphere). It is to remind that ozone is an oxidant which is harmful to health and the environment.
Thanks to its Chemicals business, Total has been able to stabilize NOx emissions from its boilers and its ovens. Numerous efforts are being made in this field especially in the chemicals sector than through Total. These efforts are directed on preventive measures, including the progressive deployment of low NOx burners to certain sites and, since 2005, all new upstream units.
Moreover, corrective measures have been applied, such as the installation of gas denitrification systems and the production of combustion urea. Certain countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and France, where Total conducts its activity, have been modernized with denitrification systems flue gas using urea or ammonia as the
