The drama “A Night Out” by O. Henry from the Literature Component for Form 2 has been chosen for Task 1 of this assignment. “A Night Out” tells the story about an ordinary office worker, Towers Chandler who saved some amount of money from his pay check and after ten weeks, he will go out with his best clothes and eat at one of the finest restaurant in the city of New York and on one fateful evening, he stumbles into a pretty young lady. The drama projects the lives in urban society at that time where it was divided to two distinctive groups; the people that needs to work for earnings such as the main character, Towers Chandler and people who are wealthy and does not have to lift a finger to work. Difference in social class was on of the main cultural issues presented in the text. Moreover, this drama text does not laid on a too-complex cultural background other than imbalance in their socio-cultural world, the poor and the rich which have divided the community into two. Comprehension of the text will be fairly a smooth journey for intermediate and high level proficiency students. However, students with low proficiency may have difficulty in comprehending the story. Luckily, there are a few ways a teacher can alter the text so that it can easily be grasped mentally by low proficiency students. One of the way is to adapt the text into familiar local settings and characters. For example, the city of New York can be substituted to Kuala Lumpur. Furthermore, the characters’ names could also be localised; Towers Chandler can be renamed as Muhammad Amin and Marian can be renamed as Amira, just to name a few. Another technique that can be used is to shorten the text. Language of the drama text chosen is simple so it is possible to summarise a few acts and only discuss with the students the important ones.
