The people of this country grew up in times of war and distress, yet some see the light at the end of the tunnel. The day when Babi, Laila, and Laila’s friend Tariq take a trip out of town, their taxi driver says, “And that, my young friends, is the story of our country, one invader after another...Macedonians. Sassanians. Arabs. Mongols. Now the Soviets. But we’re like those walls up there. Battered, and nothing pretty to look at, but still standing” (Hosseini 146). I believe this shows the perseverance of Afghanistan culture. So many times, the people have been knocked down, but they still get back up. This shows the hope that these people have, and that they do not want to completely severe the ties between them and Afghanistan. This recreates the idea that if a person loves a country, he or she will never give up in the hope of a country. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, the craft of it makes it interesting to read. The problems that exist make me want to keep reading to find out if anything gets resolved in the end. In the future, I hope that both Laila and Mariam find true happiness in their lives. I would like to read more about the gender roles that are prominent in this story, and see if it is possible to overcome. I think Laila and Mariam will try and rise up against the horrible conditions that they are currently in. This novel never fails to give the reader suspense, and keep you on your
