In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams falls in love with John Proctor after being his maid but, for John to love her back, death would be forced upon his wife. Since Abigail Williams is motivated by her love for John Proctor, her decision to sabotage John and Elizabeth’s marriage creates death for John and many others by the end of the play. Abigail’s love for John Proctor motivates her to act the way she does. The only thing stopping her and John’s relationship is Elizabeth. In that case, Elizabeth needs to die or be thrown in jail and Abigail will do anything for that to happen. For Elizabeth, Abigail taking her spot is all that’s on her mind. “And think to kill me, then to take my place” (pg 61) explained Elizabeth as she argued with Proctor about Abigail’s wants.
