According to Stress in America: Are Teens Adopting Adults’ Stress Habits? teens have reported that their stress level during school by far exceeds what they believe is healthy (Apa.org). The letter grading system is causing stress, anxiety, and even depression, as well as making it harder for the students to progress in their education. Just because a child has higher grade than others doesn’t mean they’re soaking in all of the information they are given. Chirta Reddy states, “An alphabet cannot explain the inner knowledge gained by a student.” Many parents and their children have been complaining about the system for years, and now schools are finally taking action. Whether it’s changing to a one-to-four system or just giving reports, it will reduce stress in students and the students’ parents. This pressure leads many kids to cheating, fear, and depression. Denise Clark Pope, a lecturer at the School of Education, says that her students, “know [cheating] is wrong; they tell me they wish they didn't do it...but they feel like the most important thing they do is get the grades, by hook or by crook.” If things similar to what happened in Pope’s classroom are happening around the country, it’s becoming a problem. Children should not wake up in the morning feeling worried about if they passed or failed the test. Stress in school can also affect the person’s outer life. A study by the American Psychological Association states, “college students were more stressed and angry and had more academic problems, relationship conflicts and health issues when they based their self-worth on their academic performance.” The system must change once the students begin basing their self-worth on the grades they
