Undertones of social stigmas attribute ethnic minorities acquiring a position in a college to Affirmative Action; conversely, ethnic majorities in college attribute a loss of admittance to diversity quotas. Ethnic minorities in college are heavily discriminated and the need to “work twice as hard” because other peers won’t accept their presence as legitimate. #BBUM (Being black at the University of Michigan) was trending nationally on Twitter in the US and had garnered much negative attention and comments; students of African descent, constituting approximately four percent of the freshmen class, had complained that they had felt trivialized and treated differently due to their skin color. (Gratz) The backlash against these students may demonstrate the negative association with diversity quotas instilled by Affirmative Action and general public dislike of the concept. Overall, racial relations are deteriorating and Affirmative Action is a contributing factor in this fragmentation of American culture, a culture enriched by immigrants and diversity. Resist and repeal or revise Affirmative Action for the benefit of all individuals, not the legislation today that is a discriminating factor used to promote a statistical figure; the United States needs to advance past the racist, bigoted and sexist ideals of Affirmative Action – it is time for a new era where society no longer has to utilize discriminatory practices such as Affirmative Action.
