This act was known as the “Triangular Trade”. An article entitled “The Tran-Atlantic Slave Trade” reported that the Europeans exchange goods such as gunpowder, munitions, textiles, and alcohol to the Africans. The merchants met at the market on the coast and people who were traded to the Europeans were mostly prisoners of war from different tribes. The trade was mainly in the west and central part of Africa. The Europeans held the slaves in castles such as Elmina in the central region of Gold coast ( which is now Ghana), Goree Island (now in present day Senegal), and Bunce Island (now in present day Sierra Leone, where they prepare them for the New World . Historians estimated that the buying and selling of the slaves was approximately twelve million of enslaved African men, women and children were brought into the New World, across the Atlantic Ocean in the 16th to 19th century. During their deporting to the New World, the slaves were chain, poorly fed and were abused in the ship. Due to the poor condition in the ship, it was estimated that 1.5 to 2 million people died and they were thrown into the ocean. Sex trafficking, child labour, forced or early marriage and bonded labour are contemporary slavery. However this contemporary slavery would emphasis on sex trafficking and child labour. On January 4, 2015 an article by endslaverynow.org reported that more than 300,000 children are estimated to be trapped in India’s carpet industry called loom. The majority of the workers are boys from the Hindu tribe. A young boy named Ravi Shanker Kumar between the ages twelve to thirteen years old who work at the carpet industry was exchanged by his parents for only 10 dollars. There he worked twelve to fifteen hours a day, seven days a week with no pay. Children who worked at loom do not get pay because of the little money the owners gave to their parents. He was beaten, tortured and kept in half –fed and half-clad. Kumar cut his finger and the boss’ wife will treat his wound with kerosene and strike a match in the wound. An article “human trafficking exposes modern form of slavery” states, “The most common form (79%) is sexual exploitation. The victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly women and girls”. This implies that the trafficker’s main targets are women and young girls because they are easy to manipulate.
