Increasing acuity of patients is resulting in more patients requiring medical monitoring. Resulting in Nurses being subject to an enormous amount of alarms causing alarm fatigue which leads to desensitization of the alarm due to sensory overload. Alarm fatigue has been acknowledged as a distractor which causes interference with patient care delivery and issues with patient safety. The joint commission indicated that there could be several hundred alarms a day on any given unit. Furthermore it was estimated that 85 to 99% of the alarms did not need clinical intervention. The majority of the alarms were due to inadequate parameters, incorrect lead placement ungluing of the electrodes and mechanical disconnections from the monitors. All of which caused alarm triggering which leads to alarm fatigue. Inspite of alarm fatigue being a commonly used term in the health care environment, it is not comprehensively defined. Therefore, Alarm Fatigue will be the focus of this concept analysis
