From reading about alienation, friendship, and identity it is clear that Fitzgerald gives some mystery to some characters and how they develop through their struggles. In the development in the story Nick and Gatsby are two major characters in which alienation occurs the most, through unexpected events friendships are formed even of the characters do not know themselves, and from beginning to end characters are able to develop their identity or have people guessing.
Throughout each chapter alienation occurs causing some hardships. Nick at times felt as if he was the only one there for Gatsby. Nick said, “I found myself Gatsby’s side, and alone...it grew upon …show more content…
Even though Gatsby is someone Nick has an unaffected scorn for Nick manages to see something in Gatsby that no one else sees. Nick saw something in Gatsby that he didn't see in anyone else. “They're a rotten crowd,” I shouted across the lawn. “You're worth the whole damn bunch put together.” (Fitzgerald 45) This goes with the first supporting detail in dealing with Nick seeing people in a certain way. Nick sees Gatsby in a more positive way than anyone else. Even though no one else cared enough for Gatsby Nick did. “ On the white steps an obscene word, scrawled by some boy with a piece of brick, stood out clearly in the moonlight and I erased it, drawing my shoe raspingly along the stone.”(Fitzgerald 150) To the bitter end Nick respected Gatsby and wanted to protect his name. Nick figured something out about Gatsby. Nick said, “He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps...His life had been confused and disordered since then.”(Fitzgerald 110) Gatsby is unable to think about his future due to him trying to repeat the past and be the person he once was but better. Gatsby once says to Nick, “You see I usually find myself among strangers because I drift here and there trying to forget the sad things that happened to me.”(Fitzgerald 66) Gatsby is trying to forget the things he could or have done in his past. He's unable to move on. With Gatsby struggling about the past many people spread rumors about Gatsby trying to figure out who he is. “It was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night.”(Fitzgerald 113) Gatsby is a mystery to everyone and sometimes the way he talks sounds like he doesn't even know himself.
