The plant is a representation of Mama’s dreams that she has for her kids. The perseverant plant continues to grow despite the poor environment, just as the characters continue to struggle with their dreams. This shown in the play when Mama says ‘They spirited all right, my children. Got to admit they got spirit—Bennie and Walter. Like this little old plant that ain’t never had enough sunshine or nothing’ (Hansberry, 938). The value of dreams is shown through how Mama takes care of the plant. She continues to care for and nurture the plant, as she does her children. The plant also symbolizes Mama’s own dream to be a gardener. She keeps the plant as a remind and in hope that one day she will be able to have her own garden. This is said in the play by Mama that the plant is the closes she has ever gotten to having her own garden (Hansberry, 938). The care Mama puts into the plant shows that she will never give up on her dream, nor her dream for her
