Mr.____’s father referred to as Old Mr._____ comes to visit. Old Mr.____ questions Mr.____ housing Shug Avery and even asks Celie if she is okay with Shug staying. Much of the letter Celie writes of how Old Mr.____ thinks Shug is no good especially since he does not know who her father is. The next visitor to the house is Tobias Mr.____’s brother who with his visit allows Celie to being thinking about the world.Celie’s thinking brings in a concept of consciousness and the fact that the world can affect her. Another important theme is the difference between those who work and those who are in charge. Old Mr._____ emphasizes that he owns land, exerting his power over Mr.____. This quilt has significance not only because it brought Sofia and Celie together, but also because it symbolizes the unity and diversity of many people in a community. Sewing is also a major theme found throughout The Color Purple. It symbolizes freedom and empowerment for Celie later on in the book but this scene may be the first instance of this freedom and empowerment. Sofia is given the quilt as she is leaving her abusive husband to pursue a freedom of her own. Sofia also takes a “looking glass” (Walker, 67). Mirrors are very important when it comes to hoodoo and conjure. Mirrors can protect one from spells and may be used to reverse spells and hexes that one has been placed under. This mention of a mirror may symbolize and foreshadow the protection Sofia may need in the future. Also in this chapter, Sofia’s sisters are described to be “big strong healthy girls” (Walker, 67). And these girls deliver Sofia to her new found freedom away from Harpo. These women could symbolize the strong, and powerful conjure women described in The Conjure
