This article’s thesis is “research has shown that poor diet and not being active are two key factors that can increase a person’s cancer risk” (American Cancer Society). The thesis of the article is very clear — poor diet and inactivity can increase the risk of cancer. It has a nice transition from discussing healthy weight to physical activity and then to healthy diet. Also, this article is easy to navigate by having section titles. The article mainly consists of information about healthy weight and healthy foods; for example, “eat a variety of vegetables and fruits each day” (American Cancer Society), exemplifies how the article consists of a lot of health tips for readers. Also, the author makes many logical conclusions about the connection of diet, exercise, and cancer. Although the article gives several tips on how to decrease the risk of cancer, and the website is a major non-profit organization dedicated to researching cancer, the article does not have a lot of credibility. The article makes many claims, but does not give concrete evidence to support its claims; for example, “to reduce cancer risk, most people need to keep their BMIs below 25” (American Cancer Society. The article never states how having a BMI above 25 increases the risk or cancer or how having a BMI below 25 decreases the risk of cancer. The author of article one gives no scientific or medical explanation of how weight is connected to cancer. The only evidence in the article to support the claim of having a healthy weight is important in reducing the risk of cancer is “each year, about 589,430 Americans die of cancer; around one-third of these deaths are linked to poor diet, physical inactivity, and carrying too much weight” (American Cancer Society); however, the article does not cite who conducted the observation to calculate the statistic, so the article still loses credibility. Another credibility issue is when the article states that being active improves the hormone levels and the immune systems, but does not provide a medical explanation of how physical activities improves hormone levels and the immune system. Article one does not contain the evidence or citations to be considered a credible
