Studying Wonder Woman as a contemporary figure, helped spread Sanger's message, one that still continuously needs support. American Studies continues the discussions that helped facilitate impactful change in the society.
American Studies also forces people to reflect on their own experiences. In an essay for American Studies 350, a class on California culture, I had to write an essay on how culture here has impacted me directly and what "my California" means. I grew up in here, but never thought about the different perspectives of California, like the idealized pictures a tourist might see in an advertisement, versus the chance for a fresh start by an immigrant coming from a different culture. Creating an educational conversation on opinions is how our society progresses, like with Sanger. American Studies emphasizes furthering discussions and understanding other people's opinions, while studying the past conflicts that shaped today's society. It creates tolerance in a culture, which hopefully elevates future problems that arise from righteous ignorance. While American Studies is a younger study than some other options, it is still a relevant and enlightening major that helps people better understand themselves and their society.
