Nowadays, English is the third most spoken language in the world. Approximately five percent of the world population speaks English. Overs the past years, English has been considered as the business Language. Furthermore, Amy Tan, who was born in California, grew up with parents who were both born in China. However, Tan has always loved language, and she often uses English to describe her emotions. Tan´s mother had experienced several difficulties when she came to The United States. Tan often found herself dealing with her mother´s problems because many people had difficulty understanding her mother´s English. On the Mother Tong text, Tan states, “And when the doctor called her daughter, me, who spoke in perfect English-lo and behold- we had assurances that the CAT scan would be found… ” (60). Tan made this statement because she often had to deal with her mother´s problems. In this situation, Tan had to come trough this problem because her mother could not explain her situation perfectly in English. Because of this, the doctors could not find her CAT scan. Also, Tan means that if her mother had perfect English, she could have more time to deal with her own problems. Additionally, instead of dealing with her own problems, Tan found herself indirectly forced to deal with her mother´s problems because she was not able to express her thoughts perfectly in English. Tan had to deal with her mother´s problems because people could not understand Tan´s mother English, so they often disrespected her and did not help her. Moreover, Tan could not let her mother go to several places by herself because she would not be able to express herself clearly.
