Background of research
Literary work is a media created to improve the someone’s creativity through a piece of writing or anything expressed in letters or alphabet (e.g. novel, poem, short story) in order to be enjoyed by the readers. When talking about literary work, it has closely relation with literary genre. However, literary genre is a convenient way to study, teach, identify, contrast, discuss, or even analyze of similar or dissimilar literary works. In addition, literary genre is divided into two categories, including fiction and non fiction.

Many her works are inspired from the experience from realistic world of Harlem’s poverty, crime, violence, economic exploitation. Like a winding sheet is included one of Petry’s great fictions. Collected in Martha Foley’s Best America stories of 1946, “Like a Winding Sheet” brought Petry national attention and a Houghton Mifflin Literary Felloship Award to complete her her best novel, The Street (1946).
This short story tells about life a black people, Johnson who has a wife named Mae as laborer in factory. Both Johnson and Mae are worked in the night shift in a labor factory. Johnson experiences the suffer because the exploitation from capitalism (white people) to work hard with regardless the condition of black people. The boss, Ms. Scott, always view Johnson as black people with hatred. She always get angry because he is late to work continously, such on Friday thirteenth, makes her calls him “Nigger.” Furthermore, he also experience the rejection and the insult by the white lady at the restaurant for a cup of coffee. She does not serve him because he has black skin. Thus, in this case, black people, such Johnson, get alienation from whites considering they are as superior class and blacks are inferior
