They are all white, rich, and have had good education. Tocqueville states these type of men are usually the ones to lead our country. Black men or women would never lead our country at this time period because they were not looked at the same and were held to a lower standard. Neither blacks nor women had rights or freedom. Even with the three socio economic classes, there was an obvious divide. Tocqueville states, “the lower social classes seem to be less likely to confuse their personal interests with this support than the upper class” (Tocqueville 144). It has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is the citizens have a voice. They get to choose who they believe is the right person to lead their country. But sometimes a candidates will say everything the people want to hear, and not actually do it. It can really affect a nation, and make the people angry. A disadvantage is the difference in socio economic classes and how they feel towards each other. The upper class is envied by the lower class. They do not look at the upper class with any remorse because they have money and live comfortable. The lower class does not always want someone from the upper class to lead their country because they do not have the same problems as the lower and do not always think the same way. Regardless, Tocqueville points are still legitimate to this day and still explain democracy
