Therefore, maintenance data both unscheduled and scheduled is readily abundant. This data was collected and used to identify what types and how many of each designator would be required to maintain the aircraft for the Navy. It is during this process the data collected does not correctly identify with the severity that is involved with flying military missions both operational and on a training level. The Boeing engines had an initial overhaul requirement of 10,000 hours prior to having any unscheduled maintenance completed and yet to date the community has replaced three engines not getting close to 10,000 hours. A standard commercial flight has one take-off and one landing with the training requirements on these aircraft the average pilot trainer has eight landings. The matrix comprised for commercial use is not for one standard with Naval …show more content…
Instead of using commercial data, the Poseidon platform has been in service now for five years. Initially maintained by contractors the airframe is now solely maintained in the fleet by Sailors. Knowing that Sailors are not the best source of man-hour data, a better collection of data would be to coordinate three different sources. The first would be connecting a trend between flight hours and landing cycles in the commercial sector looking for maintenance requirements on the unscheduled avenue. The second would the same data on the military side, looking at the same trends; however, our flight hours would be far less, but landing cycles would be greater. Once averaged this would be a good document to estimate the maintenance requirements. The third document would be the Sailors Man-hours logged via OOMA, while not the most accurate tool it does help provide data on Sailor generated maintenance to a specific troubleshooting, removal and replacement of individual components. Using these data points ECMs could more accurately measure the manning requirement for the community. These would take time and while effective in the long term, the community still has a problem today. Close-loop detailing will not fix the shortages but by allowing the platforms experienced Sailors the opportunity to stay in the community, it will effectively bridge the gap until the fix can be put into
