Introduction
Osmosis is defined as the movement of water from a region of water that has a higher potential to a region of water that has a lower potential through semipermeable membranes. There are three types of solutions, hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. Hypertonic solutions have a higher concentration of solute while hypotonic solutions have a lower concentration of solute. Isotonic solutions have an equal concentration of solute. There is no net movement going in or going out of the isotonic solution or solute. The purpose of this experiment is demonstrate osmosis by weighing the dialysis bag to indicate whether or not the bag is hypotonic, hypertonic or isotonic in the different concentrations of water and sucrose. By carrying out this experiment we will be able to better understand how the process of diffusion and osmosis works. My hypothesis is that diffusion will continue to occur throughout these various mixture of concentrations in the dialysis bags until equilibrium is reached. Once equilibrium is reached there should not be any net movement. Therefore, I predict that the bag with the higher concentration of sucrose will turn out to be hypertonic and while the lower levels of dialysis bags with sucrose will …show more content…
This is because sucrose has a lower water potential thus making it hypotonic when placed in water. As there are more water molecules outside of the sucrose bag, more will go into the bag than out. Eventually after a while the sucrose bag will not take any more water as it has reached its potential. I learned that the bag filled with water in a sucrose solution will lose water by osmosis. As there are more water molecules inside the cell. The net movement would be that water is going out of the bag. This causes the bag to lose weight. The bag can be taken for a
