With people living longer, this number is estimated to double by the year 2050. However, I did find it a bit disconcerting that there are so many organizations involved in the screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and they all seem to disagree with one another. There were minor disagreements, such as the amounts of calcium and vitamin D that one should take. Another disagreement with regard to when a person should begin being screened for osteoporosis. Moreover, none of the organizations can agree on an interval for which repeat screenings for osteoporosis should be performed. Because osteoporosis can have so many mitigating factors not everyone can fall into a specific 2 year or 5 year interval. That being said, I would like the organizations to agree that screening intervals should be based on a person to person basis.
