She is also telling Ponyboy that he has a mind of his own, and he does not have to live up to the expectations of the Greasers just to fit in. When Ponyboy mentioned in the beginning of the book that, “Nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do,” (Hinton, 2) he is showing how not all Greasers are the same. Ponyboy is a smart kid, but since the Greasers are also seen as dumb, Ponyboy tries to hide his differences in order to fit in with his peers.
Society sees the Greasers as dumb, poor, and cruel kids, but S.E. Hinton is showing that judging people just based off of their living circumstances and the way they dress does not really show the personality of that person. Everybody is different in their own way, and not all people act the same way as their peers. Everyone has a mind of their own and can make their own decisions, peoples personalities don’t always reflect off of where they live, their wealth, their physical appearance, or their “clique.” Judging others based off of society will only create
