The Great Learning, which was written by Confucius, is a text that teaches about how “to illustrate illustrious virtue; to renovate the people; and to rest in the highest excellence.” This is especially important in regards to how there cities were governed. This text also laid out how the rulers should regard their people and how they needed to live in order to find Knowledge in the world to better themselves and their kingdom. “The ancients who wished to illustrate illustrious virtue throughout the kingdom, first ordered well their own states. Wishing to order well their states, they first regulated their families. Wishing to regulate their families, they first cultivated their persons. Wishing to cultivate their persons, they first rectified their hearts. Wishing to rectify their hearts, they first sought to be sincere in their thoughts. Wishing to be sincere in their thoughts, they first extended to the utmost their knowledge. Their beliefs in the world’s beauty and power was very well displayed.“In spring it is the dawn that is most beautiful.”, “In summer the nights.,” “In autumn the evenings,” “In winter the early mornings.” These four explanations of the seasons’ beauty show how much of a role that nature played in their culture. It was important culturally to understand nature. The samurai were the ones in charge of the government, and everything was based on honor and journey for themselves and their families. They had to live by the code of honour, and if they were to break this code, their family would be disgraced. There is a story that explains how a young warrior named Ko No Moronao, “a man who, failing in his attempt to seduce a married woman, resorted to brute force.” When the story ends, Ko No Moronao has retired from the world of politics and has become a monk.
