Men had a fold of cloth over the belt that they used as a pocket. An exomis (a chiton pinned on the left shoulder) was worn for exercise, horse riding, or labor. The himation (a cloak) was worn by women and men, and was basically a rectangular piece of heavy fabric, either wool or linen. It was draped diagonally over one shoulder or evenly over both shoulders. The chiton was often made of linen because it is a lighter material and men were outside more, and they would require more comfortable clothing. Young men wore a short cloak called a chlamys. The himation served two purposes, mainly for men. It was handy if you were a soldier and away from home, also serving as a blanket on a cold night.
In early Greece, men normally had short hair and grew beards. During the Hellenistic era (a time between the death of Alexander the Great and the rise of the Roman Empire) , beards went out of style.
CHILDREN Children normally wore nothing at all, but sometimes they wore cloth diapers. If it was cold, of course, they would be more wrapped up. Children also often wore only cloth wrapped around their middles like wrap skirts or shorts.
