The fungi that is on the walls of the tunnel, are called some sort of eukaryote or fungi. Since it was a eukaryotic fungi, the organisms that make up the writing cannot be yeast, but it can be some kind of other fungi that has never been seen before. Fungi does not need light to grow so it does not need to perform photosynthesis to give itself carbon dioxide. The biologist was right when she said that it was a fungi and not something else because if it were another plant, then it would have to had sunlight in order to survive and stay green on the wall. “I saw that the letters connected by their cursive script, were made from what looked like from the layperson like rich green fernlike moss, but in face was probably a type of fungi or other eukaryotic organism.” (Vandermeer 24) The psychologist also had hypnotized all of the members of the expedition incase something went wrong or they needed to eliminate the xpediton in Area X. At the beginning of the book there is a biologist, a psychologist, an anthropologist, and a surveyor. They were all there to research different different things in Area X and work together. They brought many different devices to Area X, the most important was the black box that all of them had on their belts. If the black box glowed red, then the expedition would be in jeopardy and they would have to get to a secure place. “: A small rectangle of black metal with a glass covered hole in the middle. If the hole glowed red, we had 30 minutes to remove ourselves to a safe place.” (Vandermeer 4) The group also took many other devices with them on the expedition, however they were not allowed to bring a compass, they could only use maps. They had test tubes with them for taking samples and microscopes to look through at data and research. They needed them to look at the weird unnerving things that are in Area X that have not been seen in the outside world. The society in Area X is very peculiar and is not well known to the people who come in on the expeditions. The plants and animals are different and there are structures there that cannot be explained as to how they got there and what their purpose is in Area
