The first key point was about which sports cause ankle injuries the most. The top three sports to cause ankle sprains are field hockey, volleyball, and football. The second key point is about where a sprain can form and how a sprain can come about in the ankle. Most ankle sprains come about when there is damage to the anterior talofibular, the calcaneofibular, and the posterior talofibular; these are lateral ligament structures. The damage to the three ligaments is caused when a supinated and inverted foot gets a stress. Some ways stress can occur is from stepping on the foot of another athlete and also landing from jumps. There are three different grades: grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. Grade 1 is a mild sprain, grade 2 is in the middle between mild and severe, grade 3 is the most severe. Most of the time, grades can be determined through the assessments that the athletic trainer assigns the athlete to do. The fifth key point is for treating the sprain. Four of the main treatments that athletic trainers tell the athlete to do are relax, ice the area where the sprain is at, compress to keep the swelling under control, and lastly use medication such as Ibuprofen to keep the pain from feeling worse.
