There are three primary type of child rearing or environment that children are exposed to: emotional concentration, avoidance and acceptance. Emotional concentration on the child ranges from overprotection to overly demanding behaviors. Physical needs are met, however, psychological needs may be withheld as parents place conditions on their love and approval. Children exposed in an overly protected environment learn that conforming results in rewards and they are depending on others for approval and a positive sense of self-esteem is developed. Overly demanding environments results in the development of perfectionist behaviors. Avoidance of the child ranges from emotional rejection and being neglectful. Children lack value due to the fact that the parent ignores their basic needs. Finally, acceptance of the child involves environments that the child’s psychological and physical needs are met. For example, “adults working in service occupations are oriented towards people and thus were likely exposed to loving, overprotective early childhood environment. Adults in more scientific occupational fields are typically not oriented towards people and therefore were most likely exposed to rejecting and avoidant early childhood environment (Niles & Bowlsbey, 2013, p.63). Roe composed an occupational classification system that has eight fields based on arts and entertainment and general culture. Service fields such as teaching, counseling and social work are people orientated occupations. Business contract occupations such as sales, involves interpersonal interactions of persuasive nature. Organizational occupations focus on systems and management. Technology involves occupations such as engineering. Outdoor occupations such as forest management emphasize on the application of scientific principles. Science included occupations such as chemist and physicist. Art and entertainment entails occupations related to acting, musical performance and painting. General culture occupations such as government professions, perpetuates the civilian. People decide their career based on their need structure, which was influenced by their childhood environment. Roe developed six level of experience
