The article also mentions how some of the women that were part of the study were not diagnosed with eating disorders even though they met the DSM-IV criteria. This is concerning because some of them reached out for help, however they did not get the help they needed in order to overcome this issue. The participants admitted that their eating disorders were encouraged and initiated by friends and other people close to them. Many people want to be part of social groups and feel accepted that is why they can start eating disorders because they want to feel approved by their social circles. People are in constant diets believing that they will not look good for others if they do not lose weight and maintain thin. In the study it was stated that 5 out of 6 women did not receive medical help and they continued to engaged in activities that altered their eating habits. People do not see that they have a problem instead support each other by not eating and practicing excessive exercise regimens and crucial diets to lose weight. People mentioned that the encouragement of how beautiful they are without having to worry about their weight makes them realized they do not have to change. People feel like they are not good enough and want to control every pound they gain and lose because they want to be accepted by everyone. Some start at a young age because their parents criticized how they look and because they have so much respect they want to achieve what other people want, but they hurt themselves trying to be that person their families or friends want them to be. I really enjoyed this article because sometimes we forget the influence we have in people and how important it is to think of what we say because a small comment can cause someone to dislike who they are.
