This morning during group time, a small group of children sat around the preservice teacher (Emily) as she read a book. This book was selected by Willow. As the preservice teacher read from the front to back, the children pointed out pictures that interested them or had previously seen. On the first page, Oliver pointed at a picture of a green frog. He then looked up at the Emily with a questioning gaze. Emily stated “It is a frog”. The children surrounding all repeated “Frog”. This continued on every page with different animals. In this book, the children were extremely interested in birds. The children required no guidance in naming this animal. Children’s responses were

Holophrases are meaningful one word utterances which are used to imply a whole sentence (Sheridan, Howard, & Alderson, 2010). This is displayed when the children stated the object words; bird, frog and birdee instead of “This is a bird”.
Repetition is also seen in this observation. When reading the book, children would repeat the main object word, while using non-verbal gestures to further communicate meaning. While saying the word, the children would point to the relating picture while looking at the teacher which is known as protodeclarative (Berk, 2009, p. 370). This displays the children’s knowledge on the specific topic of animals.
This meaningful experience allows for the children to further develop their turn taking conversation skills. The children would wait until I finished the sentence to point out their interests in the book. This is extremely important for future social interactions. Developing fine motor skills are essential in cognitive development. With the children featured in this observation, being between the ages of 15 months and 2 years, the children have previously achieved prereaching, reaching with ulnar grasp and transferring objects from hand to hand. They children were pointing at specific items on the page such as a bird, which resulted in the children needing their fine motor skills and hand-eye
