Lauren is a 14 year old, 9th grade student from West Baltimore. I chose to profile Lauren because she has taken a special interest to me. Lauren spends a lot of her time after school talking to me about her life and how she experiences Baltimore. Lauren has also been in two physical altercations since the start of her freshman year. She has also been noted as a “red flag” because of her apathetic demeanor. I chose Lauren because I was interested in hearing more about her family dynamics and how it impacted her behavior in my classroom.

Previous to profiling her, I would get extremely annoyed when Lauren decided to be apathetic in my class. It has been difficult to separate Lauren’s behavior from who she really is. This has led me to give Lauren a lot of consequences. While I intend on giving consequences because I want to hold Lauren to high expectations, it has dawned on me that I need to be more understanding of her. I chose to profile Aaliyah Gaskins because she often comes to class angry. I’ve felt like it is important for me to get to know her and to understand why she is consistently angry. Despite Aaliyah’s disposition, she makes a point to participate and she has yet to miss a homework assignment. Aaliyah has repeated a grade before and she has also confided that she is in foster care. While talking to Aaliyah about her foster family, she has revealed that her mother has too many children to care for her and her brother. She has been with her foster family for seven years.
