Students in a bad mood are less likely to pay attention and complete their work than students who are happy. Robert Jones, a graduate of the University of South Florida, said in his thesis: “students identified with ‘major depression’ characteristics reported averages of 0.359 to 0.434 grade points lower than non-depressed students.” (3) Dr. Teresa Lesiuk is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Music Therapy at the Frost School of Music in Miami and her research focuses on how music affects workplace performance. During her research she found that, “In one study involving information technology specialists, she found that those who listened to music completed their tasks more quickly and came up with better ideas than those who didn’t, because the music improved their mood.” (4) In another study at the University of Missouri, scientists have found that people can boost their mood simply by listening to upbeat music. Lead author Yuna Ferguson said, “Although pursuing personal happiness may be thought of as a self-centered venture, research suggests that happiness relates to a higher probability of socially beneficial behavior, better physical health, higher income, and greater relationship satisfaction.”
