The definition of a criminal tells us that criminals are a person who has committed a crime and broken the law in some way, shape, or form. Common sense tells us that criminals do not follow laws, so gun control laws will just add to the list of laws for them to break. One example of a law that was broken is the Gun Control Act of 1968. The Gun Control act of 1968 did not prevent any crime from happening and in “states enacting more-relaxed right-to-carry laws, murders fell an average of 8 percent, rapes an average of 5 percent, and aggravated assaults an average of 7 percent between 1977 and 1992” (Lott 1). Research done by John R Lott Jr has shown that gun control laws do not actually prevent crime, and states that allowed concealed carry and exhibited relaxed gun control laws saw drops in crime between the years of 1977 and 1992. This shows that when citizens are allowed to carry concealed guns crime rates become lower. This demonstrates that without gun control laws or bans in place, and with citizens being allowed to carry concealed guns, the rates of violent crimes have shown a decrease. This shows my thesis is correct because it has been proven that citizens who are allowed to carry guns, do in fact use them for self defense and protection, thus scaring off criminals and preventing further crimes from being
