The Founding Fathers while deciding on how their government should run had one major concern. They needed to form a government that would be free of tyranny. Since they had just broken from Britain who had attempted to do this to them, these concerns were very real to them. While creating the Constitution, arguments broke out over the fact that human rights were not addressed in the Constitution, therefore James Mason fought to have the Bill of Rights passed in order to protect citizens from an …show more content…
With this in mind, when looking at crime rates, murders, and suicides over half of these are done with handguns. For example, in the shooting at Virginia Tech in April (2007), the weapon used was a 9mm Semi-automatic pistol. At this terrible tragedy, there were thirty-two college kids and a member of the staff killed. (Lee, 2015) People looking at this event tend to choose to look at this in one of two ways. Either they believe this event would have been prevented by taking away gun rights from people. In their minds, that would have eliminated the problem. In contrast, others believe that placing things such as armed guards or armed police in schools would prevent these events from escalating without infringing on gun rights. Equally important is the fact that countries with the strictest gun-control laws tend to have the highest homicide rates. In fact, according to the United Nations, as of 2005, Scotland (who have some of the strictest gun control laws in the world) was the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. (Gun, 2015) Violent crimes there have doubled over the last twenty years. Anti-gun control supporters, state that by taking guns away from the American citizens they are taking guns away from the people who pay taxes, have jobs and who buy guns and ammunition legally. By doing this, the government is punishing law-abiding citizens, taking away a right from them that were given to all citizens at the birth and a right that they have done nothing to lose. Also arguing that as a nation, a person must never forget that it is an individual that commits acts of violence are individuals that are already breaking the law any way they can. By taking gun rights away, the government is giving those same criminals an advantage, as they have no problem
