He married the love his life Gertrude Raedts. The Raedts family was a very wealthy family, some believe that being apart of this family helped Minuit start his life as a broker.…
Why do some have the ability to survive the hunting of a hunter, while most others the huntsman uses as the victim do not? Why are some much better survivors than others? There are certainly many traits that Rainsford possesses that help him beat the odds, and General Zaroff. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game”, Zaroff is a general who hunts humans because he thinks that since animals cannot reason, they are too easy to defeat. Therefore, he challenges Rainsford, a normal hunter who hunts animals, to a hunting game.…
Would you be able to cut your own arm off with a dull knife to survive? Aron Ralston, an accomplished mountaineer, discovered that he had what it took to complete this gruesome task. Ralston decided to take a simple day trip to Blue John Canyon, Utah for some canyoneering in 2003. Unfortunately, the trip took a turn for the worst after an 800 pound boulder fell onto his right forearm, crushing and trapping him in the confined space. This trip was supposed to be a leisurely break from his usual grueling mountain climbing.…
When a person is born with a disability they have to overcome obstacles that normal people would never understand, simple things like getting dressed in the morning, having friends. Belonging to groups. But people with these obstacles are completely normal they just look different on the outside. In the Acorn People by Ron Jones I had every question I ever had answered about people with disabilities.…
For caregivers of someone with a disability, dealing with everyday tasks related to the disability can be a challenging feat. For some families, a solution to this problem was aided by a controversial medical intervention that stunted the growth of the disabled individual at a young age. This stunting of growth has caused debate amongst individuals on whether or not it is ethical to do so to the child. For the Preslar’s, however, medically stunting their son’s growth was the answer to their future caregiver woes. As a result of a complication during pregnancy, Ricky Preslar was diagnosed at a young age with a form of cerebral palsy called spastic quadriplegia with static encephalopathy (Field, 2016).…
When it comes to discrimination, most people's thoughts are immediately drawn to the concepts of race and gender. Both racism and sexism are hot-button issues in society today, and rarely a day goes past without news programs airing stories about discrimination in our culture. Unfortunately, discrimination against people with disabilities is a much less well-known issue. If you child has a disability, they are protected against discrimination by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. This means that if your student is otherwise qualified to receive a service or to participate in an activity, their disability cannot prevent them from doing so.…
Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough. - Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1936 Courageousness. Courageousness and confidence and dignity. These are the principles of standard charisma in even the most elusive parts of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s mind as he was buckled into a heavy corset with braces that ran from his hips to his heels.…
Traditionally, we think a hero to be someone who is physically strong but over time evolves into someone who is mentally strong. In both The Odyssey by Homer, a story about a great Greek hero and his journey back home to his wife and son, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, a story about a boy who has autism and runs away from home and faces many mental roadblocks along the way, heroic traits are displayed. Both of these books show heroes who emerged and gained strength. Odysseus illustrates incredible physical strength but lacks mental strength.…
In modern American society, both inside and outside the workplace, people who show visible signs of any form of handicap are frequently discriminated against for mostly, if not specifically, that reason. With 19% of the population of total citizens in the United States of America, disabled Americans make up a sizable amount of adults that are living in the same conditions as average, able-bodied Americans (Nearly 1 in 5 People Have a Disability in the U.S., Census Bureau Reports). The prejudice against the disabled for nothing more than their handicap is commonly referred to as ableism; indeed, even with such a large amount of the population on their side, the disabled have not yet reached equality in comparison to the able-bodied. Though…
One of the problems about being a legend in any field is becoming the subject of conjecture. This imaginative inference is designed by others as a means of determining how the great hero would respond to a given situation. That is what is being presented here: an educated guess of how an icon of education would respond to the ideas of two contemporary theorists. So therefore, in this scenario one finds the fabled John Dewey philosophically sparring with present-day experts G. E. Zuriff, Lorella Terzi, and John Stuart Mills regarding their opinions of education.…
One example of personal strength is Sofia being persistent and not giving up on living the ‘normal’ life, like how everyone else is expected to live. After the attack in Sofia’s old village,…
JJ Goodie’s article, “Single-Handed Cooking,” is structured around a man who has overcome his physical disability through his love of cooking. Whether he was trying to prepare foods or open a wine bottle, he didn’t let being physically disabled define his personality. Now imagine yourself in his shoes, would having a physical disability define the person that you are or would you define your disability?…
Throughout many years of history, those with disabilities were not always treated fairly or given equal opportunity. Activists around the world have worked together to achieve goals such as increased access to all types of transportation and a safer day to day environment. Equal opportunities in employment and education have been a big part of their efforts too. For many years, children with disabilities were many times segregated and not given an equal opportunity for a chance to learn and succeed in school. A disability should not limit a person’s choice to improve themselves and their intellectual capabilities.…
Person First Language Reflection 1. What concepts did you find interesting or important from this article? I think the most important message that the article brings out is we need to treat the people who have disabilities as people like everyone first, but not as their medical diagnoses. They are the unique individual, they are a group of people that use their bodies in difference way, and they share the same rights as everybody. As people who don’t have disabilities, we shouldn’t use any words that contain with negative perception and stereotypes to describe the people who have disabilities.…
