First of all, his painting was oil paint on canvas, which was initially the medium I wanted to work with. Second of all, the cubistic, geometric composition of Bird’s Nest, inspired the geometric triangle layout for my piece. This idea gave rise to the composition that represents order in disorder. This is an analogy for how even though we consider our socially so “civilized” and “modern,” our polluting behavior to our Earth seems to indicate the contrary. This is why the nineteen triangles that create the layout for Love the Ocean, Don’t Leave Trash, fit into the Fibonacci Spiral. Furthermore, the content of Bird’s Nest regarded an important issue, the devastating conquest of Tibet by the Chinese. Hongtu’s piece made a direct commentary about this injustice; thus the artwork was withdrawn from China by the government. I found motivation and admiration of the fact that artwork has the power to make such an enormous statement on an issue, like Bird’s Nest had. This is the reasoning behind the content of my project: a desire to make an impact of the issue of ocean contamination. Through this piece, I hope to bring public awareness to the irresponsible littering of humans. Love The Ocean, Don’t Leave Trash aims to let people analyze the trash and gain insight that the trash is formed of familiar items. I learned that I should be more moderate in my projects and not try to paint an immensely detailed piece in a short period of time. This is due to my admiration to create complex pieces and the love for artistically challenging myself. Moreover, I learned that if I plan on working with oil I have to extend the time needed further to allow for drying time. Lastly, I learned that I need to work quicker in my preparation and photographing for the artwork. In this project for example, I spent a great deal of time creating the t-shirt to be worn while I collected trash, collecting the trash itself, and creating the composition for the painting on Photoshop. Overall, if I had the chance to redo this final project, I would make my preparation fast and start painting as quickly as possible so time would be left over to allow the painting to dry. I would recommend for any future student who is assigned this project to plan time for the project carefully by creating a schedule of how the project will be performed and follow it
