His adolescence life consisted in traveling extensively with his family for the reason that his father, Rafael Fuentes was a Mexican diplomatic; he traveled to North and South America, and Europe. During his stay in Washington, D.C., he learn English becoming fluent, and also learned diplomatic issues that were spoken on the dinning table with his father. He also learned the differences and seminaries of cultures while traveling through Latin America; these countries include Chile, Argentina, Panamá, and México. During Fuentes adolescent life he was interested in pursuing a career in writing, but his parents wanted him to pursue a legal profession. To satisfy his parents he studied law at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City where later attended the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Geneva, France. His career life includes becoming a member of the Mexican delegation of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva from 1950-1952. He was ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico as assistant chief of press section 1954. He was in charge of cultural dissemination for the University of Mexico 1955-56, He also served as the Mexican ambassador to France from 1975-77, But resigned in protest against former President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz’s. And taught in various prestige’s universities like University of California, Columbia University, Harvard University, Cambridge University, ect from 1970’s and 1980’s.
