According to Pierre Bourdieu, “knowledge of the upper and middle classes are considered capital valuable to a hierarchical society.” Pierre was addressing the question of social inequality in the society. As a matter of fact, knowledge helps individuals to determine what is God and wrong as well as influence their execution of particular tasks and responsibilities in the society. Thus, it is prudent for an individual to have a background information and knowledge of a particular cultural phenomenon which enables him or her to make an informed decision on whether to follow the majority or to be unique because they do not believe in that phenomena. Pierre goes on to say that “If a child is born into a family whose knowledge is already deemed valuable, one could then access the knowledge of the middle and upper class and potential for social mobility through formal schooling.” This shows that people have the ability to get insight on various subjects such as the celebration of the Valentine’s Day through learning both formally and from individuals in the middle and upper social classes.
