Born in Venice, Italy on March 4th, 1678, Vivaldi has become one of the most recognizable composers of all time. Prior to becoming a composer, however, Vivaldi was appointed to be a priest. He later gave up his position and focused on his passion for music. Vivaldi was exposed to music at a very young age. His father was a violin teacher and taught Vivaldi how to play. Vivaldi later became a notable virtuoso violin player. At twenty-five years of age, the Devout Hospital of Mercy in Venice even named Vivaldi the “master of the violin”. In 1703, he was promoted to be a musical director at the Ospedale della Pieta, an orphanage in Venice for young boys and girls. It was here that he began to teach young girls how to play different instruments as well as how to perform his compositions. Vivaldi, along with other directors, hoped that wealthy audience members would be stunned by their amazing talent and fund the orphanage. The performances of these young girls became recognized internationally and many people from all over Europe came to see them perform. These were the first performances that were not secular.
