Introduction The word communication has been derived from the Latin word ‘communis’ which means ‘common’ which consequently implies common understanding.
In the words of Rollo May “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing. Business refers to any human activities undertaken on a regular basis with the aim to earn profit through production, distribution, sale or purchase of goods and services. This communication barrier may lead to misunderstanding between receivers of the message. To minimize the barriers of communication in the organization, there must be improvement in the managerial efficiency.
Some of the important barriers in communication are discussed below
Physical barriers: Physical barriers are those barriers which are already present in the environment. Some of them are controllable by the management and where some are not.
i. Noise. As we experience in a day to day life, noise acts as a barrier to communication. Likewise in an organization also for example in a factory premises, two people wants to communicate, noise acts as a barrier because of the noise of the machinery. ii. Time and distance. When two people want to communicate, if the receiver for the communication doesn’t have time to listen to the communicator, then it act as a barrier to communication. Or there is too much distance between person A and person B, again the distance acts as a barrier to communication. iii. Defects in the medium of communication. For example two people are communicating over a telephone line and there is some disturbance in the telephone. Then the receiver would not be able to the proper message of the sender.
