Remarkably, De Lange (2012), described her own experienced from her parents, relating that she and all of her siblings grew up to be bilinguals. Her father was English, and her mother, French. Amusingly, her mother got this absurd idea to talk to her in French even when she was a baby. So, as she was growing-up, she felt that she was practically raised, into two countries. Probably for other ordinary girl like her at that time, will find it difficult to speak French, however in her situation, it’s an ordinary and typical conversations with her mother while having a shopping ensemble!…
Well, in conclusion, I had different reactions to different people. I know that for North Americans awkward moments are something that they try to avoid, and it is a bit difficult to handle. But also was a good exercise for me, trying to understand that the language barrier is not something that is complicated for the person that can not or is not speaking the language of the country where you are living but also for people that cannot speak your language, could be frustrating or challenging for…
“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…
My sacred place project is an off campus, place. I chose to do the daycare here in town. I work at the daycare and it seemed like the perfect place. I chose because of its innocent nature and the fact that not only are the children learning from me, I am also learning from them. I felt this was the perfect opportunity to make it my sacred space.…
To begin with, being considered an outsider will hinder one’s participation within their community. By keeping them in the middle or below class, having a great lack of authority given to them, and consistently being discriminated against, which would not only affect their participation but lead to them not even wanting to be within that community anymore. Being an outsider by means of: economic class, ethnicity, race, religion, authority, and parenthood would only keep their participation rates supremely low if not none at all. Firstly, the verbal and physical abuse on the “outsider” group such as the Roma in “Europe’s Unwanted People” and the poor african american’s in the “Other Wes Moore”, did nothing but make them want to have nothing to do with their community and participation involving it.…
Kevin was starting to get angry because his father was not listening to him. Kevin said " If you do this then this will help out Cromwell." Howie said "But can’t you just train him in the back yard." "Yes but this program will make him more active than he is. This will really help him dad."…
Halloween comes across as a huge cultural shock for individuals who are newly immigrated into the United States. For my parents, coming from Albania, Halloween is something completely out of the ordinary, something that would have never been allowed under Albania’s communist regime. However, tying to assimilate into American culture, my parents consented to allowing me to dress up and participate in the festivities. I was excited, I was only six years old, but I knew what I wanted to be; Batman. Except, my mom did not get me what I wished for, she ended up getting me a Robin Hood costume instead.…
Being Enlightened Most high school students have known their peers since middle school. These students grew up in similar environments, and have been taught the same material from history or about important figures in the U.S but, there are some who grew up knowing different people in different environments and have been taught differently. How would they feel when they are placed in an environment they do not know about? I was born in India and I grew up in an environment different from that of America.…
I am a white femme presenting human. I don’t feel like it is my place to define what being black means- or on the other hand, what it doesn’t mean. By no means do I want to broaden the culture of stereotyping folks based off of their own personal identity. In our class this semester we have talked at length about black artists who have been judged based off of how black they are or how black they aren’t.…

People have always been interested in the idea of finding out about personal identity, what makes you the same person as you were when you were five and what will make you the same person when you are eighty. Derek Parfit summed up this idea by saying “Whatever happens between now and any future time, either I shall still exist, or I shall not. Any future experience will either be my experience, or it will not.” (Parfit- 186), which is what personal identity looks into. This essay will discuss whether personal identity is a matter of physical or psychological continuity, taking into account the famous ideas of philosophers such as John Locke, Derek Parfit and Bernard Williams.…

Becoming Me Who am I? That is a question people ask themselves every day. I can honestly say that when I wake up and look in the mirror, I am happy with whom I have become to this point in my life. I am a better person than I once was with a lot left to learn and live for.…
