Renoir was also a French painter who is considered the leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. He celebrated beauty, especially feminine beauty. Renoir was the child of a working class family and worked in a porcelain factory when he was a boy that led him to his talents in drawing. He also painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations before enrolling in art school. He often visited The Louvre to study the master painters of France. When he began his study under Charles Gleyre in Paris in 1862 he met Sisley, Bazille, and Monet. Sometimes in the 1860s he didn’t even have enough money to buy paint. Even though Renoir began his exhibitions in 1864 he didn’t receive recognition for another ten years, which was due in part to the chaos of the Franco-Prussian War. While living and painting on the banks of the Seine River in the Paris Commune in 1871 some members thought he was a spy and almost threw him into the river. Beginning in1874 Renoir began his worldwide travel going to England, Algeria, Spain, Italy, and Germany. While in Algeria Renoir contracted pneumonia that caused permanent damage to his respiratory system. In 1890 he married Aline Victorine Charigot who had on numerous occasions served as a model for Renoir. After his marriage Renoir painted many paintings featuring his wife and family life. In 1892 Renoir developed rheumatoid arthritis
