Social Behavioral Benefits from Authoritative Parenting
Parenting styles play a vital role in the development of children. Research has shown that parenting styles can influence a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological growth. Which will affect children both in the childhood years, adolescence, and on into adulthood. This is because children develop through a number of motivations and interactions which surround them in their everyday lives. Using this type of parenting without having physical punishment will yield more positive results for children in today’s world. Children who have been raised in authoritative homes have more of a measure of competence, social growth, self-perceptions (Ballantine, 2001). This is true not only in childhood, but also during adolescence and adulthood as well. There is evidence that there is also higher academic achievements and psychosocial development, and fewer behavioral problems with children from these homes. According to Smetana (1994), when engaging in more complex trust-building activities will increase the bond of trust between the parent and child. The authoritative parent would also have rules that the child would follow and there would be punishments if they were broken. Explaining to them why they are being punished for what rule was broken is essential for the child to grasp the concept. Emphasizing that taking things away things that do not belong to them is bad and why stealing is not trustful behavior (Smetana 1994). Telling stories where characters display trustworthiness and explain why the characters are trustworthy. Introduce movies that show them situation of when they lose or gain trust. Then talk to your child about how the character could have done things differently in the situation of losing and regaining trust. Ask what the character did right in the situation to stay trustworthy and have your child explain to you
