In other words, she reflects the materialistic young woman that involves herself with everyone for something in return. At the beginning of the tale, Alison is seen as a “young girl who is twelve years old and marries a much older and wealthier man.” (The Longman Anthology British Literature Fourth Edition Volume 1A). Throughout the tale, Alison continuous the cycle and ends up being married five times during her forty-years of age. For this particular poem, the Middle Ages society focuses more on the female depending on the circumstance. On this poem, Chaucer wanted the reader to grasp “that women during this time took pride when it came to marriage.” (The Longman Anthology British Literature Fourth Edition Volume 1A). By doing this the women had total control of their husbands and could dominate them however they wanted. For instance, Alison controls her five husbands by using her sexual power. She saw this form of controlling as a type of mechanism to satisfy each husband until they paid her. She continued this until she met her fifth husband where she deeply fell in love. As a result, “her manipulation toward men decreases due to the strong feelings she had toward her fifth husband even though he mistreated her violently.” (Class Notes). Both of these poems make the reader go through aspects involving society and religion content to show each of the main characters life and how much they have evolved throughout the poem. For instance, Beowulf is and will always be remembered as a warrior because of what he did on the day of the last battle. Even though, he knew he wasn’t going to survive the fight with the dragon he didn’t get discouraged and continued his path. Today, this aspect in life can be seen as a message that interprets the meaning of never giving up no matter how difficult the circumstance can get. As for the Wife of Bath, the author introduces the knight’s character where he comes in the poem for one thing, to find out what the ultimate desires of women. As a result, he would have full authority toward the women that whatever he asks for it will be pleased by the women. In return the women would be rich and beautiful. The overall message, in the ending of the poem is to show that even though the man hands a woman something good in return for pleasing him in everything it doesn’t mean to do it.
