The Glasgow Coma Scale is an instrument that has become widely accepted to evaluate the seriousness of the brain injury. This scale measures the level of consciousness that ranges from alertness to coma. Scores are given according to response levels in three areas: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response. The scores range from the numbers three to fifteen. Three being the most severe and fifteen a mild injury. These scores also fall into three categories: Mild GCS: 13-15, Moderate GCS: 9-12, and Severe GCS: 3-8. Based on his injuries John experienced a severe level of injury scoring a 7 in the Glasgow Coma Scale. Patients with those scores are usually said to be in a coma (Rowlett, 2001). A coma refers to prolonged unconsciousness with little to no response from an individual and cannot be wakened up. To really know the extent of John’s residual effects, it will require that he wakes up from the coma, if he is in a coma. It is said that individuals with difficulty information processing take things in a literal sense.
