After gaining independence on September 7th, 1822, Brazil became a Federal Republic (University of Oregon, 1995). When under Portugese rule, Brazil’s capital was Salvador, but after gaining independence from its king, son of a Portugese monarch, Brazil’s capital went inland to Brasilia (Gale Sites) (Pimlott, 1988). Today, a female president governs Brazil, her name is Dilma Rousseff.

Brazil has an extended amount of exports due natural features in the north. Areas around the Amazon River are great for farming crops such as wheat, rice,corn, sugarcane and much more. Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is symbolic of the national ethos because it plays a role in many of the dualities in Brazilian life: wealth and poverty, African and European, female and male. The key to Carnaval’s popularity is its break with and reversal of the everyday realities of life (University of Oregon, 1995). Carnaval is a time when all of Brazil comes together, no one plays roles, there is no class system, people dress up, everyone has a fun time. Some movies, such as the movie Rio, portray Carnaval in a professional way.

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world. It has 5000 miles of beach and contains most of the biggest rainforest in the world, the Amazon (Gale Sites). Brazil also contains most of the Amazon River, the second largest river in the world next to the Nile in Africa.
