In the executive branch, the president is elected by the popular vote and serves for a four-year term, but may be elected for a second term as well. The president is both head of government and chief of state. The legislative branch is the National Congress which is formed by the upper Federal State (81 members serving for eight-year terms) and the lower Chamber of Deputies (513 members serving for four-year terms) (www.brazil.org). In the judicial branch, the Supreme Federal Court is the highest court and its main responsibility is to protect the constitution and Brazilian’s rights. Brazil has a civil law legal system derived from the implementation of the Roman law by the Portuguese colonization.
