Bunge Nipawin, is a canola crushing and refining plant in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, which is part of a larger company called Bunge Limited. Bunge Nipawin specifically sells canola meal, crude canola oil, and refined canola oil to various external and internal customers. As the refinery and utilities supervisor, I look after the tank farm inventory, the bleaching process, the deodorizing process, the boilers and auxiliary equipment, the tailings pond, and the skimming pits.
The Pitch - Problem Background
It is industry practice to hinge a quality specification on a taste test, prior to shipping the rail car of canola oil to the customer. However, the concern here is that it is a subjective test, since different lab technicians vary …show more content…
Also, a taste test will be used to verify the control sample, to make sure they are acceptable in that regard. Although it is not entirely deviating away from taste tests, every sample after the control will be more standardized. Unfortunately, the company will have to invest the entire amount to develop the diagnostic machine, but the chance for reward is too high within the company to ignore. However, the costs will not be excessive, since all of the tests are already performed, however, no machine performs all of the analysis in one.
Simple Essentially, a diagnostic machine will perform all analysis required on canola oil, thus removing the subjective bias between lab technicians.
Small steps The control sample will be analyzed and uploaded into the memory of the machine, and only a 100 mL sample is needed. Then the in process sample can go through the same diagnostic test, and the result will be a percentage of how close the process sample is to the control sample. Therefore, the closer to 100% the result is, the better the result.
Comparable fit Although, this machine will only work for canola oil, the technology can be adapted to other grain commodities like soy, and flax.
