This means they must have empathy as well as discernment towards suspects when dealing with a case. For example, in many homicide cases, detectives will have to talk to someone who is upset due to the death of the victim. While the detectives must question them to either eliminate them as a suspect or to gain helpful information, they must be sympathetic towards their feelings. They must also, “understand the perspectives of a wide variety of people,” due to the numerous people they have to interrogate and interact with (Bureau of Labor Statistics). When questioning suspects and witnesses, detectives must be able to have discernment to solve the case. They must be able to determine the motives of suspects and use the present evidence to either eliminate or confirm them as suspects. “For instance, they may monitor the suspects’ movements, conduct interviews with them, search their computer files, or analyze their credit card records,” (Career Cruising). This information will be able to show the detectives if the suspect is suspicious or innocent only if the detectives are able to discern the information well.
