The nuclear industry encompasses an extremely diverse set of various types of jobs. Engineers are needed to design solutions to both current and future plants. Mechanics, electricians, and other technicians are needed to maintain plants in ready to operate condition. Additionally, there are other auxiliary services required for tasks such as construction and refueling. The focus of this report will be on nuclear plant operators and technicians. Even within this specialized section of nuclear power careers, there is a large diversity of duties and responsibilities. Careers beyond Plant Operations
Experienced senior reactor operators have prospects for performing work that is geared towards management and oversight. In the Appendix, Job Example 2 shows an opening for a Work Week Manager. Basic prerequisites include in-depth experience with plant operations, which is in line with more senior plant personnel.
New construction of nuclear power plants is on the rise in China. Many plant designs are based on the Westinghouse AP1000 platform, which is a US design (World Nuclear Association, 2015). With this, required expertise has required personnel with a strong background experience in nuclear operations to participate in new construction projects. A perfect example of this can be found in the Appendix, Job Example 3.
These two examples are very different career paths beyond plant operations, and exemplify the diverse options available to those considering this type of career.
