Habermas’ theory is appealing in terms of its approach wherein the emphasis is on communication and comprehending rationality through argumentation devoid of any coercive force. This dynamic approach on democratic lines involving all the actors and agencies in the process of meaningful debate to address the issue of climate control of the Maltese Island is very appealing. Importantly, application of such a theory and ideologies presented by it needs to be implemented in order to, in the least, commence concrete actions towards climate control. On the other hand, Castells’ theoretical approach is of Communication power which bears similarity to Habermas’ theory but employs a different mode. Castells’ advocates use of information and communication technologies to instantly reach out to a global audience and create a much required awareness of the problem and in this case, the issue being climate change of the Maltese Island. The employment of technology for global movements is common practice in todays’ day and age. Several movements all around the globe have received instant recognition and audiences owing to instant communication technologies. Castells’ belief is in propagating ideas and addressing issues through high usage of information and communication technologies such as mobile phones and social network media i.e Facebook and Twitter. Castells’ approach could help create a global environmental movement with participants and support from a global audience as there is a greater increasing degree of environmental awareness in recent years post the catastrophes such as earthquakes in Japan and the Tsunami several years ago.
