In this regard, the business leader has an opportunity to turn weakness into a strength. Considering that production machinery contributes to the firm’s competitiveness and performance, the business leader must implement a total productive maintenance (TPM) program as a proactive method to target root causes of machinery inoperability and improve machinery effectiveness to generate a more reliable production process (Modgil & Sharma, 2016). Additionally, where the balanced scorecard (BSC) provides a framework to measure levels of effectiveness and performance against strategic goals, the business leaders can expand BSC metrics and incorporate measures of effectiveness regarding TPM practices and machinery maintenance to meet and support strategic goals (Kunz, Siebert, & Mütterlein, 2016).
